During the 2016 Rio Olympics, a young woman born in Columbus OH, emerged with force in the sporting competition par excellence. The young American, Simone Biles, just 19 years old, won 4 gold medals and 1 bronze medal in the Olympic competition (she had already won gold medals in different competitions worldwide).
5 years later, during the Tokyo Olympics, Simone Biles, the great favourite of the competition, did not hesitate to withdraw from the competition citing mental health problems, but not before winning a silver medal and a bronze medal. Just two years earlier, along with a hundred other athletes, she had denounced sexual abuse by the former gymnastics team doctor. Simone Biles retired completely from competition for two years, just after the Tokyo Olympics.
Just a few months ago, Biles made a strong comeback to world competition: she was the first gymnast to complete a Yurchenko double somersault, which she had attempted before but never completed.
These days, during the Paris Olympics, we have seen a very special accreditation in the American gymnastics team: that of Beacon, a 4-year-old Golden retriever who has become the most famous therapy dog on the planet.
Therapy dogs have been helping to reduce stress and improve the emotional tension of many people for years, but this is the first case applied to a group competition.
The American gymnastics team is once again making history at the Olympic Games thanks to the return of Biles and the management of emotions with Beacon.
The experience proves, once again, that self-love and self-care is the best way to come out of a period of stress.
