The recent string of tanker explosions in the Mediterranean has left the shipping industry—and European policymakers—scratching their heads. In just the past month, three oil tankers have been hit by mysterious blasts, raising serious concerns about maritime security and the broader geopolitical landscape. But while Europe tightens its grip on Russia’s shadow fleet, the US political climate seems to be shifting in an entirely different direction. So, is Europe playing the right game, or is it setting itself up for failure?
One of the most striking incidents happened on February 15, 2025, when the Greek-operated oil tanker Seajewel suffered two explosions while docked at the Italian port of Savona. Divers later confirmed a hole below the waterline and found dead fish floating nearby—suggesting, rather dramatically, that some sort of explosive device was used. Italian authorities are still investigating, but no clear answers have emerged yet.
This wasn’t an isolated event. Just weeks earlier, another Greek-owned tanker, Seacharm, was damaged by an explosion off the Turkish coast, near Ceyhan. Then came Grace Ferrum, a Liberia-flagged tanker, which faced a similar fate off the Libyan coast. The common thread? All three ships had made recent stops at Russian ports.
Now, here’s where things get even more interesting. Europe is doubling down on its economic war against Russia, with the EU rolling out its 16th package of sanctions, targeting the so-called “shadow fleet” moving Russian oil. Over 70 vessels have been blacklisted, and stricter enforcement measures are on the way.
But here’s the question: are these hard-line policies actually making Europe safer? Or are they just pushing the shipping industry further into chaos? After all, mysterious explosions on commercial vessels aren’t exactly the sign of a well-managed conflict.
Meanwhile, across the Atlantic, the US political climate is taking an unexpected turn. While Europe stays firm in its anti-Russia stance, voices in America are shifting the narrative. Some influential figures—particularly in the Republican camp—are starting to downplay Ukraine’s position, even questioning President Zelensky’s credibility while giving Putin a more favourable light. Could this signal a future where the US softens its stance on Russia, leaving Europe more isolated in its approach?
If that happens, Europe could find itself in a tough spot—caught between its own aggressive sanctions policies and a shifting global power dynamic.
